CIMS WEEKLY CHARTS: WEEK ENDING 9/14/23

Hi Everyone,

This week I am thrilled to announce that we have a new addition to the Coalition of Independent Record Stores. We are proud to add Rust & Wax in West Palm Beach, Florida to our CIMS roster!

One thing that really stands out to me about our organization is that despite our stores being their own independent establishments, there is definitely a common thread that runs throughout our group. It is one of the reasons we don’t add stores very quickly. We like to really take the time to get to know the individuals behind the business and make sure that not only are they a good fit for CIMS, but that CIMS is also a good fit for their shop.

I have enjoyed getting to know Melanie and Jesse Feldman, owners of Rust & Wax, as we have gone through this process, and one of my favorite things is learning about how all of these amazing record stores got their start. I guess I am a sucker for a good origin story, and I have heard some great ones over the years.

As our newest member of CIMS, I thought it would be nice to share one of those exciting origin stories with you, in the words of Melanie and Jesse themselves.

So please read on and without further ado, please meet Rust and Wax!

Rust & Wax Record Shop in its current form was born in November of 2020, but our shop has been around in some capacity since 2014.

We started this as a weekend side hustle while both of us worked our full-time careers (Melanie in social media marketing, Jesse as an attorney).  With this new venture, we found ourselves popping up at local indie markets across the state of Florida each weekend selling records and an assortment of vintage goods (hence the “Rust”). This path eventually led to us getting recruited to open a small record shop inside a local collective of makers called Elizabeth Ave Station (“The Station”) in West Palm Beach, FL.

Over a period of 2 1/2 years, our small record shop inside The Station kept growing in size, starting with only two bins of records and eventually growing to close to twenty bins.  We held in-stores with Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio, The Jacuzzi Boys, and more. And most importantly, we built an awesome community of fellow local music-lovers.  Things were looking up.  Then Covid hit, The Station (and our shop) closed, and we were forced to move all of our inventory into our house.  We thought our record shop dream was dead.

In order to stay connected to our customers, we started hosting weekly live-stream sales over Instagram, all while continuing to work our full-time jobs from home during lockdown.  It was during this time we both realized the world could end, or we could be gone in an instant, and we knew we didn’t want to go out as anything but record shop owners.  So we made the decision to quit the careers that we hated and go all in on the record shop.

We leased a new standalone space in the same neighborhood as our old home at The Station and, in November of 2020, in the middle of a global pandemic, we opened our doors for the first time.

This November will mark three years of our shop being open.  In those three years, we’ve held an in-store with the Scone Cash Players, several incredible Record Store Day events, many amazing listening parties, and thankfully have watched as our local vinyl community has continued to grow and flourish.

We are grateful to be West Palm Beach’s friendly neighborhood record shop.  We are also grateful, and consider ourselves very lucky, to be joining CIMS and the incredible group of stores in the coalition.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Cool It Down
(Secretly Canadian)

Andrea Paschal - CIMS/ThinkIndie Executive Director
When Fever to Tell arrived, and if floors could talk, my hardwoods would have begged for us to take the countless dance parties somewhere else. Every album since, I have loved this band much like a child loves a special stuffed animal, and just like rediscovering that old friend, there is no love lost with Cool it Down. Maybe it is because Karen O (especially) is such a reminder that we all grow up and evolve, but you don’t have to lose that childhood spark and Nick and Brian provide the perfect landscape to get lost in that world. So, yeah (yeah, yeah)…I am loving this album, the hardwoods... not so much!

CIMS WEEKLY CHARTS: WEEK ENDING 9/8/22

Hi Everyone,

I have to say it has been exciting to see the return of tours and live music, and I have a feeling I am going to be very busy this fall! It has also been fantastic to see our stores get back to in-store performances and appearances. This is such an important part of the record store experience, and in addition to shows themselves, these events create special moments and memories for years to come. In-stores bring everything full circle when you get a chance to see your favorite artist perform or meet them in the very aisles where you bought their albums.

Speaking of, Fingerprints Music in Long Beach California has been on quite a run with a very successful Yungblud instore, a Jackson Wang meet and greet, and then closing out the week with a signing with none other than the legend…OZZY!

I know how much work goes into putting these together on every level from the artist, labels, management and especially the stores and their staff, so I think it is important to give a shout our and thanks to everyone that helps to make in-stores happen.

Thanks for continuing to make these moments happen and creating the memories!

CIMS WEEKLY CHARTS: WEEK ENDING 9/30/21

Hi Everyone,

This week I am very excited to announce that Dearborn Records has expanded. They opened their new location on September 2nd in Farmington, Michigan and things are off to a fantastic start for them. Effective next month, we will be adding that location to CIMS. This is also a very exciting way for them to celebrate 65 years in business this year!

28ffbc1a-9c74-81e3-8af2-81248bd940dc.jpg

The new location (a former Dressbarn), is a large space to fill, but the plan is for 4700 sq ft of the total 6200 sq ft. to be reserved for retail. Much like the Dearborn location, Dearborn Music Farmington will offer new and used vinyl records, CDs, t-shirts, DVDs and Blu-rays, books, games, and more. Rick and Kevin Leannais (brothers and owners of the Dearborn Music stores) hope to bring lots of new faces to downtown Farmington and not from just that community but from all over.

From Rick:
“A record store is a destination store. So, we're not gonna just be pulling people from Farmington, we’ll be pulling people from the surrounding communities. It's gonna bring more people downtown, and maybe for the first time. They’re going to get a chance to look at the farmers market or some of the restaurants down there, the other shops. We like thinking that we're a fun shop to go to. We don't just have music. We have music, pop culture gifts and t-shirts; we have family-oriented games. We like to think that we’re a great destination for all things entertainment, just in general.”

Dearborn Music Farmington is located at 33025 Grand River Ave. in downtown Farmington. So, if you are in or around the area, be sure to check them out.

We are excited to welcome this location to CIMS and are all very excited to see this growth within our group.

CIMS WEEKLY CHARTS: WEEK ENDING 9/2/21

Hi Everyone,

This week we have some big CIMS news to share with the group.

Our previous Executive Director Michael Bunnell, and his wife Jil Sevy, owners of the Record Exchange in Boise Idaho turned over their keys to the store yesterday.

After founding The Record Exchange in 1977 and growing their business into a Downtown Boise institution for over 44 years, Michael and Jil are retiring to enjoy travel and other pursuits.

Michael was one of the founding CIMS members and served as our CIMS board chair for many years before serving as our Executive Director from 2009- 2019. During this time, Michael and I worked together through some crazy changes in this industry (those just keep coming don’t they…), and through the years, I also have many fond memories of lots of good times spent and great talks with Michael, Jil and their boys Ian and Eric who I watched grow up. I consider them not only colleagues, but also friends and extended family, so I could not be happier for them.

But don’t you worry, the Record Exchange isn’t going anywhere because there is more exciting news! Michael and Jil have sold the business and are turning over the reins to long-time Record Exchange employees Catherine Merrick, Glenn Newkirk and Chad Dryden, and Dryden’s wife Erica Sparlin Dryden. This group has a combined 43 years of experience (almost as many years as the store itself) and I am so happy that the legacy of this store will continue. I know the future of The Record Exchange is in good hands and they will remain a proud member of CIMS.

As one journey ends, a new one always begins. I am wishing this group the best for the new journeys ahead and looking forward to being along for the ride.

I am including the full announcement from Michael and The Record Exchange Below:

Greetings industry friends,

I am excited to announce that after 44 years of running The Record Exchange, Jil and I are retiring and selling the store to our longtime employees Catherine Merrick, Glenn Newkirk and Chad Dryden, and Chad's wife Erica Sparlin Dryden. Tuesday was our final day as owners. Read the full announcement below.

It was a privilege to work with both CIMS and Record Store Day from the ground up and to see the two organizations now recognized as leaders in the industry. All of these store owners, managers, CIMS and RSD staff, and member stores are the real deal – people who have dedicated their lives to an art form they believe in and genuinely love. They've weathered every kind of storm imaginable and still stay committed to independent music retail and to their communities. They're heroes and deserve support and recognition from the industry to which they've dedicated their lives.

Thank you for supporting The Record Exchange all these years and for continuing that support as the store changes hands.

Michael Bunnell

The Record Exchange is changing hands for the first time in the store’s 44-year history, but the new owners will be familiar faces to customers of Idaho’s largest independent record store.

Founder and owners Michael Bunnell and Jil Sevy have sold the business to longtime employees Catherine Merrick, Glenn Newkirk and Chad Dryden, and Dryden’s wife Erica Sparlin Dryden. Merrick, Newkirk and the Drydens will assume ownership on Wednesday, Sept. 8.

After founding The Record Exchange in 1977 and growing the business into a Downtown Boise institution and leader in the national music retail industry, Bunnell and Sevy are retiring to enjoy travel and other pursuits.

“My vision for the store from the beginning was to create a place where people of all ages and musical tastes could discover and share their passion for music,” Bunnell said. “I wanted the store to be an ‘experience,’ and I hope on some level we’ve succeeded in that goal. It was always my hope that when Jil and I were ready to retire, the store would continue in the hands of employees who care about the culture we’ve created. I couldn’t be happier about the employees who have stepped up to take the helm and guide the store into the future.”

With an initial inventory consisting largely of his vinyl record collection, Bunnell and then-partner Al Benton opened The Record Exchange in a modest Orchard Street storefront on the Boise Bench. A year later, in 1978, they moved the business to the Hitchcock Building at the corner of Idaho and 11th streets to fulfill Bunnell’s vision of a full-service record store in Boise inspired by the shop of his youth, the original Tower Records in Sacramento. In 1981, Bunnell bought out Benton and later partnered with Kathleen O’Brien, who ran a poster shop next door, and the two businesses combined under The Record Exchange name until 1992, when Bunnell and Sevy bought O’Brien out of the business. The downtown location was expanded many times over the years, and in 1996, Bunnell and Sevy purchased the building, which they will continue to own in retirement. While it is well-known for its deep music inventory, the store diversified to include gifts, apparel and Downtown Boise’s first espresso bar. Sevy, Bunnell’s wife and partner, officially joined the staff in 2001 as the gift shop buyer and manager and was instrumental in growing the store’s non-music offerings.

The Record Exchange has spent nearly 45 years making itself a vibrant part of the Boise music scene. By featuring local and touring musicians on its built-in, professional-level stage, the store established itself as one of the leading music venues in the state. Record Exchange in-store alumni include Smashing Pumpkins, Ed Sheeran, Built to Spill, Josh Ritter, Ben Harper, They Might Be Giants, Brandi Carlile and Luke Combs.

“We are very grateful to the Boise community for its support over the years, in particular the local musicians who have played our stage and contributed their talents to countless store events,” Sevy said. “We thank the wonderful employees we’ve worked with over the decades, including our two sons Ian and Eric, who have all been a vital part of The Record Exchange family.”
In addition to running The Record Exchange, Bunnell was a founding member of the Coalition of Independent Music Stores (CIMS) and served on the CIMS board of directors for 13 years until he was named executive director in 2008, a position he held until 2019 when he retired to focus solely on the store. In addition, Bunnell also served on the Record Store Day board of directors for 11 years.

Under the leadership of Bunnell and Sevy, the store has earned accolades from grammy.com and several national publications, most recently No Depression magazine, which named The Record Exchange one of the top 75 record stores in the country. Locally, The Record Exchange won both the Idaho Statesman and Boise Weekly’s Best Record Store reader’s poll awards for so many consecutive years that the category was retired.

The new ownership group, with a combined 43 years of experience at the store, is eager and excited to take the reins and lead The Record Exchange to even greater heights.

“As a youth, I spent many hours in this building – it was a safe space for me, particularly as a female music enthusiast who didn’t fit in elsewhere,” Merrick said. “The Record Exchange has always encouraged women to be a part of this industry, so to be able to be part of the RX team, as a young customer to long-time employee-turned-owner, is really validating. I’m excited to carry forward, and build on, the tradition of making RX inclusive and to continue supporting and fostering the diverse artists and creatives in our community.”
Said Newkirk: “The Record Exchange had been my home-away-from-home for 30 years. I’m honored to be a member of the RX family and feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to be part of the continuing story.”

CIMS WEEKLY CHARTS: WEEK ENDING 9/24/20 + RSD DROP #2

Hello Everyone,

Last Saturday marked our second RSD event and I am happy to say it was another successful event for our stores. I think the only downside for most were the allocations and cut orders on a few titles where there was just a lot more demand from the stores and their customers than supply (I am looking at you Fleetwood Mac). From the numbers I have gotten reports on, after RSD Drop #2 the stores were on average at about 76% of RSD 2019 sales which is great news!

This week I have included a few of the wrap-ups from our stores:

Twist and Shout
Record Store Day Drop #2 - September 26, 2020 at Twist and Shout
A little hard to describe this second RSD drop. Financially we did 88% of the August drop’s total with about half the number of titles. The customers still seemed pretty psyched. Our sell-through was strong. On the other hand, there was palpable exhaustion visible amongst the staff. The workload is similar, but the emotional payoff of the huge crowds and sense of event is lessened by the health and safety strictures we are forced to implement. This is nobody’s fault. This is the unprecedented time we are living through. Everyone’s exhausted by something right now. Hard to complain.
I remain grateful to the labels and RSD for making this happen - it is overall helpful and heartening. Doing something special for record store employees - like a really cool exclusive shirt or 7” just for employees - would be a super nice gesture for someone to do. All these good people working for us are on the front lines of the music industry, putting the best face on the bands, formats and experience of being in a physical record store. (Maybe advance copies of the Tool LP - Ha!)
The Allman Brothers were our big winner this time - but I’ll bet we could have sold 10 times as many Biggie if we’d had them. Customers really seem to dig the controlled nature of our system - unless they get a late time slot, then attrition starts picking up. But that’s really the nature of RSD - the stuff is limited and as we all know, there is no sales aphrodisiac like scarcity.
Thanks to everyone who helped make it happen.
Paul Epstein

Record Archive
An absolutely gorgeous day in Rochester NY- can you say 80 degrees in September?
The lines were about 100 people when we passed out our timed shopping tickets. ( 8:30 pass out)

1 Food Truck, 2 live bands, " Spin the Wheel" For fun prizes, local celeb DJ Dino Kay on the mic, as well as rocking the Bar were all part of the scene. We are far more organized
Noticeably quieter and may I say that there was not as much enthusiasm in this month's list. We also discussed (internally) that due to current NYS Guidelines we cannot
" promote live music performance- it must be incidental to the dining experience." SO....

Now the numbers:
Sell through 75%
Best Sellers:

  • The Wall

  • McCartney

  • Fleetwood Mac- wished we got more!! damn allocations

  • Britney Spears

  • Brandi Carlile

  • Doors

  • Garcia

  • Replacements

  • Primus

Not so highly coveted or shall we say I was thoroughly covered with: black crowes, hendrix, tove lo, rolling stones

Since this is so difficult to compare, I have looked at our first 2 drops combined and am happy to say we are at 81% of RSD 2019.
The Sept drop was slower than August, only about 70% of what we did. However, sell-through was great~
All good, forever grateful to all those who made this possible! THANK YOU~

The Long Ear
Overall very successful RSD drops. Sell through around 75%, which is excellent for us. We ordered more carefully this year when orders were due last March due to the virus, so pleased with the results. Although sales were down a bit, profits were up. Customers had a great time & observed our safety precautions. Looking forward to RSD#3.
Take care & thanks for all of your efforts on our behalf, Terry

Easy Street
Again, we did about ¼ the biz as we’d normally do on RSD, but with that being said, it went way better than anticipated. We’ve had a range of local problems, wildfires, protests, and our West Seattle Bridge is still closed off to the rest of the city.

Being here in Seattle, one of the original COVID epicenters, we are still only in Phase 2, so health and safety have to be our first priority. We didn’t encourage browsing and had some sections of the store closed off.

We did a lot of Instagram/social stories throughout the day. https://www.instagram.com/easystreetrecords/

We had 98% sell-through, no previous RSD had we ever been in 90% percentile. Our orders were pretty conservative though. We could’ve certainly used more McCartney, Bill Evans, Notorious BIG, Currensy, Allman Bros, Meat Puppets, Tegan & Sara, but we’re not in a position to be taking chances right now. Before anyone gets their bustle in a hedgerow, just know we ordered 3,000 copies of the Brandi Carlile title…we wish we could’ve gotten em all. A Brandi + Soundgarden RSD project is about as mouthwatering a title as we could ever imagine here in the NW, especially at this store. Brandi is coming off 3 Grammys and is absolutely adored here at Easy Street and throughout Seattle. Also, as some of you know, Chris Cornell and his family had lived a few blocks from Easy Street. We hosted release parties for every Soundgarden record over the years. Chris was the first person to ever sit at our coffee bar. He had a beer instead of a coffee… if u were curious. This title holds a very special place in our hearts and was recorded at our friend's studio, London Bridge.

We posted all remaining stock online at 7 pm after we closed. There’s really nothing left. Thank u Broadtime, it all worked out, whew.

Next month, we’ll see how Seattle is fairing health-wise and what the state regulations are, but for now, we’ll continue to fix up, paint, and remodel the store during all this craziness.

Appreciate you all inspiring us. We see you.

Music Millennium
 Hello All -
It was an interesting day for RSD Drops 2. Our first person in line showed up about 8 pm Friday night. Same person who was our first person for RSD Drops 1. We had put some canopies out on the sidewalk early Friday evening due to the heavy rains all week. Luckily for all that came, the rain did not arrive during the night.

I arrived at 5:30 am Saturday and handed out time slots to those in line. It was surprising to only see 30 people in line, 40 less than RSD 1 at the same time. It took till 7 am before we had that other 40. We again let 30 people in every 30 minutes and managed to have 5 minutes to spare to do some cleaning and sanitizing of the counter, pens, etc. Everyone snaked through the store and walked by every release from RSD Drop 2 as well as what we had leftover from RSD 1. There were people who had not made it to RSD 1 and we sold a fair number of the leftovers. Last time we gave away time slot tickets up to 2 pm and we kept store to RSD shopping only. This time we only gave time slots till 11 am, 3 hours into the day.

We planned on opening the store to full shopping at 2 pm but made the decision to go back to a limit of 10 people in-store shopping shortly after 11 am. I think it really helped the day out but created lines outside of 15 to 30 most of the rest of the day till 7 pm. We stayed open to 10 pm, up from our COVID hours of closing at 7 pm. This week we will expand to staying open till 8 pm.

We did not hand out gift bags or our traditional coffee and muffins due to COVID. Everyone was happy just to be able to get a chance to pick up some if not all the coveted titles from this Drop. Though we normally have live music events, we did air a live stream at 3 pm with Arlo McKinley, the last artist John Prine signed to his Oh Boy label.

Our sell-through was just over 70% for the first day and I’m sure we will see that go up with today’s business over 75%. Very happy with that. Our business was about 37% of RSD 2019 and 88.5 % of RSD Drops 1. We were happy with that as we were hoping for at least doing 30% of RSD 2019, based on the
amount of titles we had.

Titles the did not perform well were from Nahko & The Medicine Show, Ellie Goulding, Rolling Stones, Group Love, Son Volt and Batman & Robin.

Thanks to all of you in the industry that made these releases and helped make RSD Drop 2 possible. We and our customers are looking forward to RSD Drop 3 on October 24th. Special thanks to Michael Kurtz, Carrie Colliton as well as Andrea Paschal and Eric Levin for all you do to make this happen… especially making well thought out decisions in changing the structure to RSD in the year of COVID.

We had an amazing day, up 17% for the weekend. 10% on Sat, and another 7% today. The amazing news is that both August and Sept have been two of the best months we have had in years.  Sept being the best, not counting RSD we have had the best Sept since 2015 and up about 23% from last year. This is just counting instore sales, our online sales are up too I don’t have the figures yet to give a % but it's strong.  We expect a big online day tomorrow. The momentum is strong right now.

We have turned a corner and we are going to finish this year really strong.  I feel a complete renewed sense of energy.

We had about 75 waiting to get in. Good weather.
Good sales. After the 2 events, we are at 81% of last year's sales, so right on track to duplicate last year. Sell-through is at 64%. Under ordered jazz and hip-hop releases. Bought Garcia, McCartney, Waters, Black Crowes and Replacements heavy as we believe these will continue to sell, so overall, sell-through is very good. Only 6 titles with no sales and sold about two dozen of RSD Drops #1 titles. I believe customers prefer these less frantic events and RSD should have a discussion about whether there should just be the two events or whether we should consider a different approach. Not sure why we were allocated on Fleetwood Mac when the sticker says 16,000 were pressed, but that was #1 bestseller.

Others include:
Brandi Carlile
Replacements
McCartney
Doors
Primus
Unrighteous Brothers
Garcia
Britney
Bill Evans

Greetings, Everyone!

Both stores had another successful RSD Drops Day last Saturday. Everything went smoothly with our social distancing protocols at the Santa Cruz location and our appointment system in San Jose. Here are the vital stats:

San Jose's sell-through first day was 93% (we're at 85% of last year's RSD totals thus far)
Santa Cruz's sell-through first day was 77% (we're at 99% of last year's RSD totals thus far).

Bestseller lists are below for each store. Things we could've sold all day long: Primus, Fleetwood Mac, McCartney, any of the Rap/Hip-Hop titles.

We're quite happy with the results and looking forward to next month's event!

RSD drop 2 was a huge success. We were about 5 times busier than a normal Saturday in September. Sales were down 15% from RSD drop 1, but I attribute that to fewer titles. We did wish lists and pulled RSD product for our customers. Everything went pretty smoothly and our customers were very happy. Selling product on our website at 1:00 helped move some product too.

Sales for drops 1&2 are very comparable to RSD 2019. If drop 3 sales are strong I believe that sales will be up 3-10% for the combination of all 3 drops vs RSD 2019.

-Kevin LeAnnais

Strictly Discs
Drop 2 was 81% of Drop 1
Drop 2 combined with Drop 1 represents 76 % of RSD 2019

We have gone the menu route and we fill orders and customers checkout outside as long as we have a line which has worked very well. We've definitely seen an uptick in mail order pieces which isn't represented in the above "front door" numbers.

I am very thankful that we can start selling online the afternoon of the drop dates; that has been a real lifesaver. Especially with so much uncertainty about future restrictions as Wisconsin and Madison are seeing a bit of uncontrolled Covid spread.

Allocations this month were a real factor with HARD cuts on much of the WEA product. AEC also continues to be slow with shipping (i.e. I received the Yardbirds RSD title today)

Lou’s
 RSD Drop #1 + RSD Drop #2 = 14.9% higher that RSD 2019. Yea!

Rhino Records
Sales were about 10% down from Drop #1.
Staff felt releases were not as exciting.
We had 15 or so titles sell in the 25 to 50 range in Drop #1.
The biggest title for us was 26 of The Wall in Drop #2.
Felt like I was cut/reduced on the Fleetwood Mac.
Similar to the Wall and other titles.
Split my orders equally between AEC/AMS except where they were AEC direct titles.
Biggest Suprise– Britney Spears!  Sold out of 15 in the first hour and we really are not a POP store.

Numbers-wise, if Drop 3 comes in around the same it will equal One Record Store Day from THE PREVIOUS YEAR.
And then I had 2 stores and were open for 14 hours a day for each store.  2019 is 1 store for 9 hours.
I consider that great and am very thankful that RSD is playing out this way this year.  I would almost like to see something once a quarter

Nick Campbell - ThinkIndie Warehouse Manager
A friend of mine turned me on to this band the other day, and I’m not sure where it comes from other than Brooklyn. However, I can see them making a splash in the near future. Their debut album fits with the sounds of contemporaries like Black Marble and Lust for Youth – (almost) club-ready synth-pop with hints of post-punk. At one point, I felt a bit like I was listening to Matt Berninger of The National fronting Future Islands. Dig it.

CIMS WEEKLY CHARTS: WEEK ENDING 9/10/20

Hello Everyone,

This week my thoughts are with everyone that has been affected by the storms and fires. The amount of displacement, loss, and destruction is devastating.  I don’t know about you, but as we work our way through another week, I find myself inching further and further away from the television and retreating to books and music for just a little escape from all that is wrong in the world right now.

Here are a few links with some ways to help out those in need at this time:

Four Easy Ways to Chip In for Hurricane Relief

American Red Cross: Hurricanes Sally & Laura Disaster Relief

Global Giving: California Wildfire Relief Fund

Eight Ways to Help People Affected by the California Wildfires

American Red Cross: Western Wildfire Disaster Relief

It is also so important to continue to support small businesses and since this is coming from me, especially independent record stores.

For some of you that support comes from buying records, or making records, and for some of you it is getting those records onto the shelves so that we can sell some records! Let’s all do our part.

2020 has not given me much else to talk about, so that is all I have, but since the music is what we are here for, I have thrown together a playlist of some songs that keep me moving.

I would love to hear what is on your lists.

Scott Register - ThinkIndie A&R

Normally, I would be getting ready to spend a week with some of my favorite artists, industry folks and music fans at Americanafest in Nashville. But what the Hell is normal anymore? Instead, I’m very excited for the lineup that the Americana Music Association has come up with for their virtual conference, Thriving Roots. The lineup up is impressive, engaging and fun. While it won’t be the same (How many times have we said that this year?) I think it’s going to be wildly successful and will make the conference accessible for that many more fans of the genre around the globe. I know it had to be difficult to put together but my hat is off to Jed Hilly and the staff at the AMA. Looking forward to attending next week!

Here’s the description for Thriving Roots from their website (www.americanamusic.org) and a link to get passes:

Thriving Roots: A Virtual Community Music Conference is a three-day music industry conference slated to take place Sept. 16, 17 and 18, 2020. Presented by the recently announced Americana Music Association Foundation (AMAF), the educational initiative brings the Americana music community together from across the world for three full days of engaging insight from its leading artists and industry professionals. With a wide variety of online programming including stimulating panels and immersive special events, attendees are in store for a unique experience that will go beyond today’s webinar-style conferences. Passes are on sale here.

With that in mind, there has been some amazing music released from Americana artists so far this year. New releases from better known Americana artists Kathleen Edwards, Rustin Kelly and several more pop into my mind but I thought I would call out three releases that I didn’t see coming that have been living with me and I just can’t get enough from them.

Emma Swift– Blonde On The Tracks (Tiny Ghost)
Full disclosure, ThinkIndie is the distributor of record on this one. With that said, I’d still be loving her take on Dylan tunes and listening to it over and over. This record sounds exquisite and is getting rave reviews across the board.

Carolina Story– Dandelion (Black River Americana)
I’ve been familiar with this husband-wife duo and I’ve liked their music but I LOVE this album. Fantastic songs, lovely harmonies and they wear their influences on their sleeves which works out well. This record is delightful.

Kenny Roby– The Reservoir (The Royal Potato Family)
The Six String Drag co-founder presents an advanced class in songwriting on this album. I’ve read where Roby was in a very dark place and The Reservoir was his therapy, his way out. What resulted is an incredible collection of songs produced by Dave Schools and dedicated to his dearly departed friend, Neal Casal. My sleeper album of the year. This record speaks the truth.
