CIMS WEEKLY CHARTS: WEEK ENDING 8/8/24

Hi Everyone,

This week I am sharing a conversation that I really appreciated. One of my heroes, Nick Cave speaking with Stephen Colbert about his new album Wild God, grief, the mystery and power of music and singing with one of my other heroes, Johnny Cash.

“Music is a thing that makes things better…. It is a sort of glue that binds us together. For me, music is really at the very soul and the core of the world.”  -Nick Cave

Enjoy the preacher man preaching.

Thanks, Russell, for making sure I saw and heard this.

Here are the charts for the week.

CIMS WEEKLY CHARTS: WEEK ENDING 8/1/24

Hi Everyone,

I want to thank everyone who took the time to join us last week in New Orleans for RSD Summer Camp and for all of the support that makes it possible for us to have that event. It was wonderful to see so many of your faces.  I always look forward to those moments of connection. Seeing our part of the industry gathered and all the conversations that happen leave me reinvigorated to get back to business.

We spend a lot of time, especially in the sidebars of that gathering talking about the powerful effect of music. It is one of the few things that can take you back to such a specific time in your life. That happened to me very randomly this morning. As I sat down to start the day, I put on an old, saved playlist. The song "Let the Cool Goddess Rust Away" by the band Clap Your Hands Say Yeah came on. It was from their debut self-titled. I haven’t listened to them in a while, but the second that track came on I had to start the album from the beginning and listen to it start to finish. It is such a sentimental record for me because it came out the first year I was with CIMS/ThinkIndie. It really is a soundtrack of a very specific and exciting time for me.

The band didn’t have a deal and they were trying to ship CDs out of their apartment. They got a killer Pitchfork review and they couldn’t really keep up with the demand.  Don (CIMS President at the time) was able to get in touch with the band and before we knew it ThinkIndie was shipping a lot of that CD to record stores all over the country. Our whole office was really, really obsessed with the record and we probably all listened to it hundreds of times- back when you did that with albums. Anyway, it really took me back to the excitement of that time. That first taste of really being into a band and loving what they made and even being able to play a small part in it reaching more people. I think that is the fun and exciting part of doing what we do. Coming back to it all these years later, I still love that record- so if you are looking for a suggestion today…you might consider giving it a spin.

Far From Saints
Far From Saints
(Ignition Records)

Scott Register - ThinkIndie A&R
Can’t stop listening to this new album from Far From Saints (Kelly Jones of Stereophonics, Patty Lynn and Dwight Baker of The Wind And The Wave). I’ve always been a Steroohonics fan and Kelly has a unique voice that is hard not to recognize. Paired with Lynn’s vocals, magic occurs and these modern folk songs take flight. The album is currently on repeat and giving me the therapeutic help I need. Looking for something new that makes you love music again? This could be the album. Fleetwood Mac, The Civil Wars, The Swell Season… vibes abound.

CIMS WEEKLY CHARTS: WEEK ENDING 8/10/23

Hi Everyone,

This time last week we were wrapping the last day of RSD Summer Camp. What a whirlwind it all was! I can truly say this is one of my favorite projects to work on and be a part of planning. This was our largest Summer Camp so far, and to bring together so many amazing stores and industry members in one city to have the conversations and interactions that we did was truly exciting.

Of course, we need to send a gigantic thank you to all the labels, distribution, one-stops, and vendors that came out in full force to help us pull this off. Your support of this event and our organizations are never forgotten. I would like to thank all our special guests, speakers and panelists for making sure we had lots of good things to talk about, and all our sponsors for helping us pull it off- especially Marshall and Deer Park/Crosley. A special thanks to Redeye, Euclid and Verve for helping to welcome us to the Big Easy, Amped and Tommy Boy records for helping us bring a little (De La) Soul to our event, ADA/BMG for the late-night tunes, ATO Records/Virgin/UMG and Eric Burton of the Black Pumas for a special conversation, Virgin Records and Czarface for keeping us cool by the pool, Thirty Tigers/The Orchard and The Shindellas for getting us going in the morning, Eleni and Q-Prime/ADA and John Dyer Baizley of Baroness for keeping it real when it comes to true music artistry and the critical role record stores can play in inspiring and facilitating that.

Finally, a massive thank you to the Hotel Monteleone for being our home away from home for the week and for taking such good care of us!

I loved seeing you all this year, and Carrie and I are already excited to get to work on 2024!

CIMS WEEKLY CHARTS: WEEK ENDING 8/11/22

Hi Everyone,

Last week marked the return of RSD Summer Camp to New Orleans, LA. This event is another way that we as RSD work every day to support, connect and lift up the indie retail community. It was a week of lively and healthy discussions about the state of the industry on every level and a chance for people to meet face to face to share ideas. In addition to Summer Camp, we held a day of Coalition meetings and, speaking of Coalitions, we were also very excited to welcome new Coalition FAMS to our group! When we took on planning the first RSD Summer Camp in 2016, it was an attempt to bring all of the Coalitions that are the founders of Record Store Day together, every year since then we have worked to open to more RSD pledged and participating stores as well. It is so exciting to me to watch our indie retail community grow and thrive and we are already looking forward to getting to work on 2023!

A massive thank you to the labels, distributors, one-stops and vendors for your support and participation. You all are a HUGE part of what makes bringing this group together possible.

Thanks to all of the stores for showing up to do this thing- we make it happen for you! To our RSD international partners that made the trip to be there with us, thank you! Thanks to Silversun Pickups and Lissie for being the soundtrack to this event (and the Lissie Pop!) and to Jon Darnielle and Dawn Richard for the amazing discussion.

Hugs and gratitude to Michael, Eric and Luann for being such excellent Coalition and RSD partners, to my partner in crime Carrie Colliton who makes the job of planning and running a conference fun, to everyone that was behind the scenes helping to make this thing happen, and to the Hotel Monteleone for making our job look easy.

It was personally great to get to see everyone connect with friends new and old, and I look forward to doing it again soon!

Bob Schneider In A Roomful Of Blood With A Sleeping Tiger (Soundly Music) Scott Register - ThinkIndie A&R One of the best albums of his career and that’s saying a lot as he’s put out plenty of them. Schneider’s enchanting voice and his masterful lyrics charm you into listening and enjoying his music and this album is full of songs that stick with you. It reminds me of his Lonelyland and Lovely Creatures albums which are two of my favorites from Schneider. Highlights include "Boys You Like," "I Love This Life," "The Band Plays On," "Lord Of The Flies" and "World Turns Blue."

CIMS WEEKLY CHARTS: WEEK ENDING 8/19/21

Hi Everyone,

This past weekend Plan 9 celebrated their 40thAnniversary with their customers and the community of Richmond, VA. The celebration included raffles to raise money for local charities, customer giveaways, sales and more.

Jim Bland is a long-time member of the CIMS Board of Directors, and Plan 9 is one of the early members of the Coalition. I have worked with Jim for many years now, but it would take only a short conversation with him to recognize and his love of music, commitment to our organization and his passion for what he does- bringing the music to the people. I would like to congratulate him and everyone at Plan 9 on reaching this amazing milestone.

I also wanted to share this feature article from the Richmond Magazine to commemorate this occasion. It gives a fantastic history of the store: click here.

Jim, we are so proud to have you and Plan 9 as a member of CIMS. It is stores like yours that provide an anchor for the community, so here is to 40 years and many, many, more.

Remember to support your favorite independent record stores so we have many more of these stories to tell!

CIMS Weekly Charts: WEEK ENDING 8/27 + RSD Drop #1

Hello Everyone,

RSD Drop #1 is in the books and I am happy to report that across the board it was a success for all. That is huge and says a lot for our stores because there was a lot of work to be done to make that a reality. First of all, you have the fact that this RSD was the first of its kind. You add to it that there were going to be issues and/or circumstances that would be specific to individual stores. We come in all shapes and sizes, so this was never going to be a one size fits all solution. However, we got proactive- holding weekly calls leading up to the drops for stores to discuss their plans of action, and most importantly, we got creative. It was so great to see how the stores came up with all sorts of ways to make the day safe but still fun and keeping the spirit and excitement of RSD alive and well. It was also really amazing to feel that sense of community echoed through the sharing of those ideas with others.

For CIMS, our stores ran the full range of scenarios and each crafted their own unique approach to the day. We had a few stores that out of either choice or necessity only did online RSD sales, we had some that booked appointments, we had some that had lotteries, some that had order menus. We had some that were large enough and had enough accommodations for social distancing to be able to go with a mostly traditional RSD approach. The one thing that I know was universally kept top of mind for each store as they crafted their plan for the day, was making their staff and customers feel safe- which was also one of our main goals when we decided to take the drop approach.

It is still too early to be able to do a complete wrap up of 2020 vs. 2019 (that will come after all three drops) and I think we all know this year may just look different because we are living in a completely different world, however I received very successful feedback from the stores which is wonderful news. I don’t have numbers from everyone, but for those that did provide info, the overall average was that sales for RSD Drop 1 were about 45 percent of RSD 2019, which is a very hopeful sign. These events are so important to the success and vitality of our stores so again, thank you to everyone that was a part of it, and hats off to all of the stores for working so hard to keep this event a success and special for their customers and community.

Here are a few snaps from the day and of course the charts.

Thanks,
Andrea

CIMS WEEKLY CHART: WEEK ENDING 8/6/20

Hi everyone,

Last week we all got together for the second round of Summer Camp “Couch Camp edition” - our virtual conference. I really enjoyed seeing and connecting with everyone as well as the discussions that were had.

One of the highlights for me was the “Black Lives in Indie Retail” panel moderated by Kendra Swinton (WMG). It was an honest and insightful discussion and brought to light many issues we need to work on within our industry.  I hope that we can keep those conversations going within our indie community and be a part of the change that needs to happen. I also really enjoyed the interview with Jim James by our own Scott Register; excellent discussions there as well.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a Summer Camp event without some live music and despite the virtual nature of this year’s conference, there was no shortage of music. There were performances by Taylor Goldsmith from Dawes, Margo Price, beabadoobee, and Taylor Bryant & The Shakedown. Thank you to our Universal family for bringing some music to our ears.

I would also like to say thank you to everyone that was a part of this event; all the panelists, the people that took the time to attend the event and participate in our discussions, and to all of the people that provided support to make this event possible. Special thanks to the Music Biz team for all their hard work which made it all look easy and to Carrie Colliton for keeping us all on task!

All in all a fun and successful week, but let’s hope that next year we will all be able to celebrate together properly in New Orleans.

Welcome Back, Kathleen! I knew I’d missed her music but I didn’t realize how much until listening to Total Freedom. Guess it takes stepping away and gaining more perspective to deliver some of your finest work to date. Kudos to her for having the guts to quit and then summon the strength to return and deliver. Highlights include “Glenfern,” “Birds On A Feeder,” “Simple Math,” “Options Open” and “Who Rescued Who.”
